  • hmm

I realized something yesterday. I never celebrated July 4th growing up. You see, my brother's birthday is July 4th. And while we did celebrate Independence Day as I was growing up most of the focus, I think, was on my brother's birthday. At least, that's the part I noticed most when I was little. Sure, we watched fireworks. But there was always cake and presents and singing happy birthday too and when you're a kid cake and presents stands out a lot.

This year my brother is out of town for his birthday, and really I kind of forgot it was a holiday. It doesn't feel like a holiday to be honest, which is weird because I am always ready to celebrate whatever. But this year something felt off. And then I realized that maybe, I never really celebrated July 4th as Independence Day. I guess I always celebrated it like it was a birthday with the same red white and blue theme every year. So now I guess is the first time I'm celebrating July 4th solely as Independence Day and it's a little strange.

Oh, and all the Star Trek series are on netflix instant play. That's exciting for sure.

  • Would it feel like a holiday if I gave you a lit sparkler?

  • @galadrielspitcher - And don't worry, I won't put a snowcone on your head. Just want you to have a fun day.

  • @TrainTrack - haha that's good to know

  • Oooh, Star Trek, cool!

If you turn on your CBS affiliate right now, you can see some awesome fireworks.

  • hahaha that is odd.  growing up celebrating it was usually a hassle and not much fun.  i quit celebrating it pretty much as soon as i could and generally the few times since than that i've tried changing that has only ended in disaster of one form or another but you know about the most recent example of that.

i just assume that day hates me like most other holidays and most people.  we've settled into a nice little mutual hatred thing that works pretty well.

  • @Pickwick12 - thanks for the heads up! i went out and saw them in person though, it was super cool!

@mrcolorful - funny, i would have though you would enjoy july 4th because of the explosions and fire and what not :P

  • @galadrielspitcher - well my parents hate every form of firework except the professional kind.  the professional stuff gets boring and feels like a bit of taunting.  also my family likes to be a long ways away from the displays so what i usually saw was the particularly high fireworks that just broke the horizon and i never heard the sounds.

then there are extremely strict laws against every form of fireworks where i lived in KC such that even those "snake" things and sparklers are banned everywhere and some municipalities even ban those things that just pop when you throw them onto the ground.
there comes a point where it all just becomes torture.  then again that might have been my parents goal.

  • yes, netflix made this week special!!!!
